Shocking Undercover Photo of Frozen McRib Patty

The McRib is back at certain McDonald’s locations again. At 500 calories, 10 grams of saturated fat, and a whopping 890 milligrams of sodium, the McRib is supposedly a boneless, seasoned pork patty on a bun with slivered onions, two dill pickle slices and sweet, smoky, barbecue style sauce.

There are roughly 70 ingredients in McDonald’s McRib sandwich, including chemicals like ammonium sulfate, polysorbate 80, sodium stearoyl lactylate, calcium peroxide, and calcium propionate.

The McRib patty is composed of restructured meat products such as tripe, heart, and stomach, cooked and blended with salt and water to extract salt-soluble proteins that binds the reshaped meat together like glue.

A flour-bleaching agent that is most commonly used in the manufacture of foamed plastics in gym mats and the soles of shoes, is found in the McRib roll.

The compound is banned in Europe and Australia as a food additive. England’s Health and Safety Executive classified it as a “respiratory sensitizer” that potentially contributes to asthma through occupational exposure. The U.S. limits azodicarbonamide to 45 parts per million in commercial flour products.

If all this isn’t revolting enough, wait until you get a look at the undercover photo of a frozen, uncooked McRib patty posted by Reddit user DJDanaK, who claims to show the McRib raw. “My buddy works at McDonald’s and sent me this photo of raw McRib meat,” DJDanaK writes.

The McRib photo, which has gone viral since it was posted to Reddit last week, looks more like frozen white plastic toy-shaped rack of ribs. One patty is being raised from a box filled with dozens just like it. And whoever took the picture is not wearing a food glove.

When asked for confirmation that the frozen white glob is a McRib, McDonald’s told ABC News:

“Just like a burger patty is formed to be round and flat, we form the iconic McRib in the shape of traditional ribs. We then flash freeze the patty to seal in flavor and freshness, just like you freeze meat in your own freezer, before going to our restaurants.”

The McRib enjoys an odd cult-like following because of the McRib’s ephemeral status.
