It’s Sunday and you’ve got a pounding headache. You’re fatigued and dehydrated. Your stomach is upset and the bathroom is quickly becoming your best friend. You went on a drinking binge; your body is trembling. Technically, when you have a hangover, you’re going through withdrawal from alcohol, and withdrawal in its severest form is what’s called having the “DT’s” — delirium tremens.
The fact is, there is NO CURE for a hangover. All you can do is mitigate the effects of withdrawal. Time is the most effective cure. But let’s see what we can do to whip you into to shape for Monday morning. Here’s 10 hangover remedies to lessen the pain and jump start your day.
1. Hair of the Dog — (Don’t try this at home, folks)
Try a Bloody Mary, but just one. The alcohol smooths out the withdrawal systems and the tomato juice is rich in vitamin C, which aids the liver in clearing toxins.
2. Drink Lots of Water
Drinking alcoholic beverages causes the body to expel four times as much liquid as you take in. Rehydrate yourself with water.
3. Eat a Bacon, Egg and Cheese Sandwich
Some claim a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich effectively relieves hangovers and they’re right. Alcohol decreases protein synthesis in the body.
4. Eat Foods High in B Vitamins
Alcohol reduces B12 vitamins in the body. Eat foods rich in B vitamins before and after drinking such as spinach, parsley, broccoli, beets, bell peppers–and even snapper.
5. Taker a Shower or Bath
Your body eliminates alcohol through the pores of your skin; as much as a third of toxic body waste is cleared through the skin. The idea is to rid your body of as much toxins as possible, and relax your body at the same time.
6. Drink Juice
Juice helps to rehydrate your body and replenish it with the vitamin C the alcoholic robbed. Plus the sugar in juices aids in breaking down alcohol in your system.
7. Ginger
Researchers have confirmed the nausea-easing powers of ginger that your grandmother was already familiar with; the spice has helped reduce nausea in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.
8. Coffee
The caffeine in coffee relieves headache pain. Caffeine also stimulates the brain to release another chemical called dopamine which makes you happy.
9. Acupressure
Acupressure is the treatment of symptoms by applying pressure with the fingers to specific pressure points on the body. To relieve a headache and nausea, apply pressure to the webbed skin between your thumb and forefinger, close to the bone at the base of the index finger bone. Apply pressure for one minute and then do the same for the other hand.
10. Sleep it Off
During sleep your body heals itself naturally by allowing your body to break down and metabolize the alcohol in your system.
Note: Do all of the above for maximum effect.
