The Gothamist first reported on giant rats [see video] scampering through baked goods at a Manhattan Dunkin’ Donuts. A 52-year-old Bronx resident, who asked to be identified as “Pjayone,” recorded the clips with his cellphone camera.

Pjayone then uploaded the video to YouTube on April 1st, and claims the footage was captured at the Dunkin’ Donuts at 37th Street and 8th Avenue.
In an email, he elaborates — “At two-thirty [in the morning] every [day] the workers load the shelves with the mornings wares. Shortly thereafter like clockwork the rats come out and party.”
Pjayone adds: “My phone ran out of power, or I would’ve filmed the outright nine deep rat assault which followed the action above.”
Pjayone also says, “The items in the video that are being besieged upon by the rats were to be sold for that mornings breakfast rush. The events you see in videos happened at two-thirty in the morning.”
Toward the end, Pjayine claims there were seven to nine joining in the festivities! Yesterday, The Daily News reported the store has been closed.
According to Health Department records, the Dunkin’ Donuts at 37th Street and 8th Avenue has an A grade, despite being cited in November 2013 for “facility not vermin proof. Harborage or conditions conducive to attracting vermin to the premises and/or allowing vermin to exist.”
The rats crawled up window curtains, scurryed over a display rack and through open food containers. Pjayone says that the videos he shot at this 37th St. and 8th Ave. location compelled his friends to rechristen the Garment District as the “Varmint District.”
“I work all over the city,” he told the Daily News. “It’s usually a common place thing that I see all around.”
Asked about rats at the establishment, an employee told the Gothamist, “I haven’t seen anything like that,” and suggested they call back in the morning to speak with a manager.
But for an added bonus, Pjayone has this outtake showing the rat in extreme closeup.
Pjayone told The News that the rats came out while a worker was stocking the food racks with fresh donuts for the morning opening.
“There’s no way he could of missed that!” Pjayone said. “He was totally lackadaisical. He couldn’t care less. It was crazy seeing the one stuck in the glass,” Pjayone said.
“What was he doing up there? Meanwhile while he’s up there, his friends are at the party on the rack!”
In an email from the NYC Health Department to the Daily News they referred to the situation as “severe” after inspecting the store on Wednesday.

“The establishment was closed by the Department because of conditions that could not be corrected at the time of the inspection, including a severe rodent infestation that requires professional pest control services,” they stated.
“They were also cited for other critical violations, including inadequate hand washing facilities and food not being protected from contamination.”
A representative for the donut chain said they are taking the matter “very seriously” and are looking forward to “reopening the restaurant as quickly as possible.”
“The health and safety of our guests is our top priority and we take this matter very seriously,” they stated in an email.
“We are working closely with our franchisee and the New York City Department of Health to correct the issues addressed during the inspection. We look forward to reopening the restaurant as quickly as possible.”
