Food prices have increased the largest since 2011, and have more than doubled the 1.4 percent increase posted last year, according to USDA data.
Bacon posted the largest percentage increase, up 12 percent, followed by ground chuck, which rose 10 percent per pound. White bread, milk and eggs also rose.
Recent and ongoing droughts have caused food shortages and a 61-year low in the U.S. cattle herd.
Jamesetta M. Walker, lifestyles, fashion and consumer affairs columnist for The Virginian-Pilot, claims greater demand for organic products also is driving up prices.
More than two-thirds of U.S. adults purchase organic foods at least occasionally, according to a Hartman Group report cited by the Farm Market Institute.
