Lively Cookie Sales For Shrewd Girl Scout Outside Pot Clinic

After Danielle Lei, an imaginative 13-year-old Girl Scout, set up a table offering Girl Scout cookies outside a San Francisco marijuana dispensary, Danielle sold 117 boxes of cookies in only two hours.

Danielle, accompanied by her mother Carol, offered patients leaving The Green Cross, a San Francisco marijuana dispensary, Tagalongs (crispy cookies layered with peanut butter and covered with a chocolaty coating), Dulce de Leches (Bite-size cookies with milk caramel chips), and other cookie varieties.

Danielle’s mother, Carol, told Mashable that’s 37 more boxes than what she sold during the same two-hour period outside a small Safeway Supermarket the following day.

“It’s no secret that cannabis is a powerful appetite stimulant, so we knew this would be a very beneficial endeavor for the girls,” Holli Bert, a staff member at The Green Cross, told Mashable.

“It’s all about location, and what better place to sell Girl Scout cookies than outside a medical cannabis collective?”

Not only did patients at The Green Cross buy the Girl Scout Cookies, employees at the clinic were also in on the cookie buying frenzy.

Carol’s two middle-school-aged daughters have sold Girl Scout cookies outside a medical marijuana clinic before, but this was the first time they stopped by The Green Cross.

The Green Cross has since welcomed Danielle and her mother back a second time. All money she makes will go toward paying her dues and supporting the Girl Scouts organization worldwide.

The Green Cross featured Danielle’s visit on its Facebook page, including a link to an external poll, which asks people whether Girl Scouts should sell cookies outside legal marijuana shops.

Dana Allen, the organization’s marketing and communications director, told Mashable that “the mom decided this was a place she was comfortable with her daughter being at.”

“We’re not telling people where they can and can’t go if it’s a legitimate business,” she said.

Girl Scouts of Colorado Say No

The Girl Scouts of Northern California don’t have a problem with this clever business strategy, but the Girl Scouts of Colorado do, saying that Colorado scouts cannot sell cookies in front of pot shops, despite recreational marijuana being legal in the state.

“Our position is really pretty simple,” Rachelle Trujillo, chief marketing officer for the Girl Scouts of Colorado, told The Huffington Post.

“For years in our council, we’ve said it’s not appropriate for Girl Scouts to sell cookies outside of adult-oriented businesses, and marijuana dispensaries fall right in line with this policy. There’s a place for everything, and just like a liquor store or a gun show, a marijuana dispensary isn’t a place for young girls to be selling cookies. There are plenty of other options for customers of adult businesses to purchase cookies at other locations.”

Despite the official Colorado Girl Scout position, the connection between Girl Scout cookies and recreational pot is well on its way.

A popular California strain of marijuana has been coined “Girl Scout Cookies” in honor of the snacks. Last year, a version of the original GSC strain took first prize at the U.S. Cannabis Cup in Denver.
