Whenever I travel, I get a kick out of conducting a little historical research on my destination. Information on a city or town’s background always adds an interesting dimension to a visit.
That same enriched experience can apply to food, especially when acquainted with the history of particular foods and dishes in certain parts of the country.
Most people devoted to the enjoyment of good food and drink can’t help but be drawn to food history, which explains the appeal of web sites like Food Timeline.org
Food Timeline.org was created by Lynne Olver, a librarian with a passion for food history. Since its launch in March 1999, The Food Timeline’s scope has grown to 70 web pages offering a wealth of historic information, documents, and original research.
The recipes featured on the site are selected from old cook books, newspapers, magazines, National Historic Parks, government agencies, universities, cultural organizations, culinary historians, and company/restaurant web sites.
One area on the site explores favorite presidential foods, and paints a unique gastronomic portrait of America’s presidents.
First Family food preferences were gleaned from primary documents (cookbooks, letters, journals), chef notes, and household ledgers. With few notable exceptions, presidential food favorites are rarely recorded by biographers.
We’ve featured 5 U.S. Presidents, and some of the their favorite foods. (Click ‘Next’ to see the list)
