20 Celebrities That Went Meat-Free and Why

According to the web publication “Vegetarians in Paradise,” the term vegan was coined in 1944 by Donald Watson when he co-founded the British Vegan Society.

The first known British vegan cookbook, No Animal Food: Two Essays and 100 Recipes by Rupert H. Wheldon pdf, appeared in London in 1910.

The Oxford Companion to American Food and Drink points out that interest in veganism increased in the 2000s, increasing the availability of vegan food in supermarkets and restaurants in many countries.

A 2009 study indicates vegan diets tend to be higher in dietary fibre, magnesium, folic acid, vitamin C, vitamin E, iron and phytochemicals, and lower in calories, saturated fat, cholesterol, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, calcium, zinc and vitamin B12.

A study published in the British Journal of Cancer found that vegetarians were 12 per cent less likely to contract cancer than their meat eating counterparts.

Many Hollywood celebrities have embraced veganism, along with several top athletes in endurance sports, such as the Ironman triathlon and the ultramarathon.

Eonline suggests stars like Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Jenny McCarthy have made the pledge to be full-fledged vegans.

While some claiming to be vegetarians only abstain from eating animal meat, true vegans take it a step further and eliminate all animal products from their diets, which includes dairy, eggs, poultry and fish.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi actually decided to go full vegan, as did celeb couple Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell.
