Breakfast is one of my favorite meals of the day. I typically wake up starving and want nothing more than to dash into the kitchen to find something to eat. One of my guilty pleasures? French toast. It’s ridiculously easy to make. While I love indulging in giant slices of syrupy bread, I try to focus on eating foods that are good for me. I truly believe that french toast tastes just as delicious when made with a few healthy tweaks. I may be biased but I made it three times last week, not that I am counting calories or anything.
High-Protein French Toast
Two slices of bread
2 egg whites
Cinnamon
1 tbsp 100% Real Grade A Maple Syrup (Stay away from fake syrup. It’s made with high fructose corn syrup and will do more harm to your body than good!)
No stick cooking spray
Method
1. Start by heating a skillet on a low setting, and make sure to spray some no stick oil in it.
2. While the skillet is heating up whisk together two egg whites in a medium sized bowl. Dip one slice of your bread into the egg whites and make sure that it is covered on both sides.
3. Place your bread in the skillet and let it cook until each side is a golden brown color.
4. Repeat those steps with the second slice of bread. Let the bread really soak up the egg whites, you shouldn’t have any left over!
5. Once both slices of bread are cooked, transfer them to a plate and sprinkle some cinnamon over each.
6. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of real maple syrup over each slice. Add a side of fruit if you want.
What I love most about this recipe is that you get to indulge in something that makes you feel guilty, but it’s healthy after all. This has been my go-to meal the last few mornings because it is filled with things that are good for me and keeps me full. Try it and let me know what you think! What’s your favorite breakfast meal? Do you modify it?
